Veteran Foley to the fore, as Transfield final reached.

Old Crescent 8  -  22 Newcastle West RFC 1st XV

Veteran second row Dave Foley reeled in the years in Rosbrien on last Saturday evening giving a magnificent display.  It was Foleys opening try which came from a short line out throw early in the game that laid the foundation for NCW to reach the final of the Transfield Cup.Shane Airey converted.

It was all NCW at this stage with Shane Airey controlling the game from out-half and pinning the home side in the corners while using the new rules to his teams advantage.  A well placed cross field kick from Airey  allowed man of the match Darragh Fox to cross for the first of his brace of tries in the corner.

Having been dominant up front during the early stages, the visitors allowed the home side to get the advantage and this lead to a try against the run of play. Charlie O Doherty scored a penalty to take the score to 5- 15

Crescent replied with a penalty and brought it to a one score game which was not easy to watch now for the visiting supporters.

The score of the day came from Darragh Fox playing on the wing when he was on the end of a passing phase involving all members of the back line, fast hands and swift passing ripped open the crescent defence.

Coaches comment.”Happy to be in TC final. Positive results to date, too many errors at vital times in the game”

So three weeks into the season and three games won. First objective achieved, Transfield Cup Final reached. The final will be played before Christmas against Richmond RFC.

We move on next week to the first round of the Challenge Cup which is the opening of the provincial competitions.
