Newcastle West RFC 1 XV

Mallow 7- Newcastle West 7

After the highs of last weekend’s win in Ballyclare, it was back to the Munster Junior League with round five.It is never easy to travel to Mallow and this was exactly as it worked out. Played on a soft sticky field it would be the forwards who would slug it out for most of the game, with neither side really taking the advantage of the the wind at their back in each half. The visitors try came from one of the few handling opportunities and Darragh Fox got over the line with Airey converting.

Mallow pressed hard all day and were rewarded with a converted try. The rest of the game is better left confined to the history books. The day finished off with a deluge of rain as the referee blew the final whistle. An appropriate finish.

U13s who beat Ballina/Killaloe/Scariff/Newport on Sunday in Cullinagh. Pictured with coaches Tom O' Sullivan and Jack Grimes.

Congratulations to the U13s on their nail-biting win over the combined

Ballina/Killaloe/Scariff/Newport team in Cullinagh on Sunday. The game was

played in excellent conditions with the visitors fielding their strongest possible

selection. Newcastle West conceded two early trys but came back quickly with

an excellent Paddy O’ Sullivan try from a Peter Hoda offload out of the ruck.

Jerry Field scored another excellent try which he easily converted to put us 22-

12 down at half time. NCW really came alive in the second half with two more

hard earned trys from O’ Sullivan and Field. Jerry made a probing run down the

wing and made an excellent presentation in the ruck which Austin Barrett got

away to Paul O Flynn and on to Paddy O Sullivan who made his way through 5

defenders to get over the line. Jerry himself scored our fourth try making a 22

metre run through the defence to get over the line. NCW were now down 31-

26 with one minute to go. Some clever tactics from scrum half Harry Murrihy

saw the ball passed to flanker Max McCoy who got in to score an equalising try

under the posts. Jerry Field converted the try to give NCW a 33-31 win as the

whistle blew. Particular mention must be given to the many players on the day

who are in their first season with the team. Every new player got significant

game time with each of them contributing to the trys scored. Our players who

have been with us for several seasons played brilliant rugby in particular in the

scrum and ruck. The team now has depth with several players now available

for each position on the pitch. The coaching team is also delighted to welcome

two new coaches to the team. Darren Normoyle and Jack Grimes – both

current club players who have been a invaluable addition to the team with

their playing experience. Well done to all and once again sincere thanks to the

parents, grandparents and families who turned out on the day to support the

team.
