Newcastle west under 15s team
U15’s prevail with late defensive masterclass…
On Sunday last our Under 15’s hosted Kilrush in the Pan Munster U16 Bowl Competition. When the
Clare boys disembarked the team bus, one would could be forgiven for thinking the younger home
team would struggle to contain them given the gulf in age & size and there were a few gasps from
the home team parents, but rugby is a game for all sizes and our boys proved this over the next 60
minutes of rugby. The first 10 minutes of any game can set the tone and while we felt we could be
better in some aspects, we found ourselves competing well around the pitch. The visitors showed
that they meant business with some powerful running and the early signs were ominous but a super
tackle from Ryan Rooney playing at 13 set the tone for our boys. While the away side had more
possession in the early exchanges it was the ever classy Dara O’Brien who put us ahead when he
handed off two defenders to go over the line for the first try of the game. Darragh O’Keeffe shaved
the post with the conversion attempt and we were 5-0 up. It wasn’t long before the visitors made
their mark when they got outside our defensive line to touch down with a good backs try. A
successful conversion has us trailing 5-7 and with the wind at our backs we were fearing the worst.
Playing up the hill for the second half (never easy in Killeline) was going to test us, but we managed
to strike first when full back Cormac Murphy, returning after a long injury lay off got on the end of a
great move to cross the line with a super try. (oh! how we’ve missed him). A super conversion effort
from Cillian Keating fell just short as we headed into the last 20 minutes 10-7 ahead. Kilrush however
had other ideas and when their No.8 ( Munster Academy Player ) picked from the back of an
attacking scrum to power over our line we knew we were in trouble. A successful conversion put us
10-14 behind but all was not lost. Our forwards aggression in the ruck slowly moved us up the field
and we looked as if we may have a say in the result yet. With slick hands from our backs, our ever
dangerous winger Liam Cussen (In front of his Kilrush Grandparents) found himself in possession
with the try line in sight. Head down and with the determination of a lion he crossed to touch down.
15-14 and 5 mins to go. The Clare boys were not finished though, and the final 3 minutes had
fingernails being chewed by the home crowd as we conceded 2 penalties & a scrum to the much
bigger visitors inside our 22. ‘Thou shalt not pass’ was the motto though, and our boys (14 year
olds) stood like men to deny the Clare lads any source of delight with tackle after tackle. A knock on
by the away team saw the ref’s whistle blow for the last time to see us victorious much to the
delight & relief of the home supporters & players. Well done to each and everyone of our boys….. a
much deserved win.
